I. An open secret: our fight isn’t sequins, it’s spreadsheets.
I’m Juan Carlos Barron. And I’m going to be brutally honest.
Since I founded B A R R O N V I S U A L and threw myself into this trench of design and strategy, the biggest enemy has never been a lack of cool ideas. We have creativity to spare. The real crap we have to deal with is data. VM Data. Visual merchandising data.
And it’s not that it doesn’t exist. It’s that people in this industry, in the VM trenches, would rather ignore it. It scares them. They don’t share it. They don’t use it. It’s like owning a Ferrari and still driving with a 1985 road map.
I look around and see the raw reality:
-
Real Visual Merchandising is the engine that turns the cash register.
-
VM done with a head on your shoulders is pure profitability.
But what do a lot of teams do? They treat it like a damn hobby. Like it’s about «what I think looks nice» or «whatever color feels right today.» And that mindset, personal taste instead of business strategy, is bleeding us dry. It’s costing retailers their bread and butter.
II. Phygital: data, the finger on the wound
Look at fast fashion. Inditex isn’t playing chess, it’s playing war. Every product, every table, every corner is placed there because the data told them it had to be. Zero personal preference, a hundred percent results.
In premium retail, on the other hand, we’re crawling. The culture is changing, yes, in fits and starts. At Barron Visual, we’re here to be the hammer: to shout that VM is a sales and marketing function, not the cherry on top of a stale cake.
But here’s the question that drills into my brain, the one that defines the Phygital era:
If our window display and visual merchandising work directly influences foot traffic, checkout conversion and product performance…
Why the hell is it so hard to connect that physical effort to digital analytics?
Phygital Merchandising is our way out. It’s where the magic of the physical store has to talk, without shame, to the brain of the website (eCommerce). It’s where the design of the display (the physical) needs the same rigor as an A/B test on a landing page (the digital).
Phygital VM demands metrics. It demands knowing how my physical window display drives traffic to my website (via QR code or geofencing). It demands knowing how the online presentation of a product affects my in-store stock.
